A Mother’s Triumph

Francine’s Journey from Despair to Hope

Francineis a mother of five children whose story reflects the incredible power of faith, resilience, and love.

When her husband passed away, Francine was left to raise her children alone. Life became unbearably difficult. She rarely smiled or spoke with others and often found herself resenting children who still had fathers — a painful reminder of what she and her children had lost. Having grown up without a father herself, she felt history was repeating itself in her own family.

Everything began to change when Hagari Rwanda found Francine. Through the program’s teachings and community support, her heart began to heal. She started learning the Word of God, and little by little, she found freedom from the bitterness and despair that once defined her days.

One of the most life-changing lessons she learned was about stewardship and love. There were moments when the weight of poverty felt unbearable — times when Francine considered abandoning her children because she could not feed them. But Hagari’s teachings transformed her perspective.

“Hagari taught me to never give up on my children, even in the darkest times,” Francine says.

The second lesson that shaped her journey was about saving and self-reliance. With courage and determination, Francine borrowed a small amount of money from her peers to start selling fruit along the roadside. From her earnings, she repaid her debt and continued saving little by little.

Francine

Today, Francine proudly runs her own small business. She has built her capital to 50,000 RWF ($35) — all her own, with no debts — and continues to save faithfully. Her children no longer go hungry as they once did. They are healthy, in school, and full of life and laughter.

Francine gives all the credit to Hagari Rwanda, whose compassion and teachings gave her a new beginning.

“Before Hagari, I thought my children and I had no future,” she says. “Now I smile again, I can feed them, and I believe tomorrow will be better.”

Through her journey from grief to growth, Francine has rediscovered her dignity and her strength as a mother. She stands as a living testimony of hope — proof that with faith, opportunity, and support, a mother’s love can overcome even the darkest of days.

The Determination of a Future Innovator

Chanceline is a bright and determined Senior Five student specializing in IT and Computer Systems. Chanceline is now in Senior 5 (11th grade) and with each passing term, she is one step closer to the future she dreams of building.

Chanceline comes from a family of four children who live with their father in the wake of deep loss. After her mother passed away, she went through a painful period of grief and depression. But with her father’s love and support, she slowly found her strength again.

Her educational journey has been made possible through Hagari’s student partnership program, which has supported her by paying school fees and ensuring she receives a quality education. At the same time, her father has also benefited from Hagari’s teachings, helping him make progress in his own life. Together, their family has experienced a gradual but steady transformation.

Chanceline

Last year, Chanceline faced another challenge — a serious illness that caused her to miss many classes and often return home for treatment. Despite her poor health, she made herself a promise: even if she was sick, she would score above 70% in her exams. Through sheer determination and perseverance, she not only met that goal but surpassed it.

Chanceline attributes her resilience and strength to the support she receives from Hagari, whose consistent encouragement and care have given her the confidence to keep striving for excellence.

Looking ahead, Chanceline dreams of becoming an IT specialist, designing and creating machines that make work easier — especially in the medical field or the military. She is determined to bring innovation to life and use her knowledge to help others.

Chanceline’s story is one of courage, healing, and purpose. From grief to growth, she stands as a powerful reminder that with hope, mentorship, and opportunity, even the deepest pain can give rise to greatness.

The Power of a Mother’s Will

Stella's Story

In the heart of Busanza, Rwanda, lives Stella, affectionately known as Mama Kevin — a hardworking mother of three whose quiet strength and determination sustain her family. Her livelihood comes from selling fish by the roadside — a modest yet steady business that keeps food on the table and her children’s basic needs met.

At the beginning of this year, Stella set a goal that reflected both her love and her vision for her children’s future. Her eldest daughter, Gatesi, is studying Computer Science, but she often struggled to keep up in class because she didn’t have her own computer. Stella decided she would change that. She made it her mission to buy a second-hand computer before the 2025–2026 school year began — even if it meant saving every franc she could from her small business.

With determination, sacrifice, and an unshakable sense of purpose, Stella met her goal. After months of saving, she purchased a second-hand computer for 180,000 RWF (about $125). Today, Gatesi attends her lessons with confidence, no longer depending on classmates’ laptops.

"Mama Kevin"

But this achievement is only part of Stella’s story. Despite the daily struggles of single motherhood, she continues to provide for every need in her household — from school supplies, rent, and food to medical care and clothing. At times, she has borrowed from her savings group to cover urgent expenses, yet she has never wavered in her commitment to repay, save, and move forward.

Stella says her greatest source of strength has been seeing how Hagari Rwanda supports her children’s education. Inspired by that example, she felt it was her responsibility to do her part as a mother. Knowing that her daughter’s studies required a computer, she reminded herself that “there was no one else who would do it for Gatesi.”

Through this journey, Stella discovered powerful lessons:

  • Every achievement requires sacrifice.
  • Saving is essential for progress.
  • And above all, a parent must always strive to play their part.

When she finally reached her goal, Stella’s heart overflowed with joy and renewed confidence in her ability to shape her children’s future. Gatesi, equally grateful, expressed deep appreciation for her mother’s love and commitment.

Stella remains profoundly thankful to Hagari Rwanda for walking alongside her family. She recalls a time when she had lost all hope that her children would ever attend school — but Hagari Rwanda stood by her, encouraging her to dream again, set goals, and believe in what was possible.

Today, Stella’s story stands as a shining example of the power of a mother’s will — and the life-changing impact that compassion and partnership can bring.

Roots of Hope: How Hagari Changed Our Home

Life before Hagari was like walking through a storm. Our marriage was weighed down by constant arguments, disrespect, and conflict. Home—meant to be a place of rest—felt more like a battlefield. We lived in a small, crowded house where tension filled the air, and even though I worked tirelessly, my efforts bore little fruit.

Profits slipped through my fingers, debts piled high, and I sank deeper into financial stress with every passing day.

I tried joining savings groups, hoping for a way out. But because of my frequent borrowing, I remained chained to debt, always struggling to repay what I owed. It was a painful season—marked by scarcity, shame, and silent tears.

When Hagari Came Into Our Lives

Then, like light breaking through a dark sky, Hagari came into our lives. At first, it was my child who received the opportunity to study in a good school. But soon, we realized that Hagari was not only shaping the future of our child, Jeshua, but also reshaping our entire family.

We were taught how to live in harmony, to respect one another, and to walk in unity. Slowly, the walls of conflict that had divided us began to crumble. I learned humility, and with it, I discovered the beauty of respecting and honoring my husband. Today, even when disagreements arise, we sit together, talk, and resolve our issues peacefully. Our home is no longer a battlefield, but a place of warmth and partnership.

Financial Wisdom and Growth

Another turning point was the gift of financial wisdom. Before, I worked hard but wasted money on fleeting pleasures. I had no goals, no vision—only exhaustion and loss. Through Hagari’s teaching, I discovered the power of saving, planning, and denying short-term desires for long-term stability.

My husband and I started small—a charcoal business with just three sacks. We nurtured it carefully, like planting seeds in fertile soil. Over time, those seeds grew. Three sacks became thirty, and with discipline, our debts shrank. Today, we live in a larger, more comfortable home with three rooms—a visible sign of how far we’ve come.

Parenting With Love

Hagari’s lessons also touched the heart of my parenting. I used to silence my children’s voices and discipline them in anger. Now, I listen. I understand. I guide with love and correct with patience. My children feel heard, valued, and secure—and that, to me, is one of the greatest transformations of all.

In Conclusion

Hagari has been more than an organization to us; it has been a lifeline. Spiritually, we are stronger. Relationally, we are united. Financially, we are growing. From a home once marked by conflict and lack, we are now building a future with peace, respect, and hope.

We are forever grateful to Hagari—for the teachings, the support, and the love that has rewritten our story.

SEEDS OF HOPE: Oliva’s Journey with Hagari

Oliva (Mama Happy), the sixth of eleven siblings, has faced significant hardships—including the painful loss of four of her brothers and sisters. A devoted mother of four, she and her husband once relied on irregular and low-paying jobs that barely sustained their family.

Her older children were enrolled in public schools where fees were more manageable. However, as her younger son, Gaju, neared school age, Oliva was filled with worry. With their financial situation stretched thin, she saw no clear path forward for his education.

But then, hope arrived through Hagari Rwanda.

Thanks to Hagari’s educational sponsorship, Gaju was welcomed into a quality school—one even better than the schools his older siblings had attended. This opportunity was a turning point for the family, easing their financial burden and allowing the other children to continue their studies without disruption.

Hagari Rwanda’s support extended beyond education. During a home visit, a social worker encouraged the family to start saving money. This conversation became a catalyst for change —Oliva’s husband gained new motivation, stopped being selective about work, and began seeking every available opportunity. Today, he continues to work diligently, and the family is beginning to see real transformation.

“I never imagined my son would attend such a good school. Hagari made the impossible possible,” shares Mama Gaju.

Please join us in praying for Oliva’s family as they continue their journey toward stability— and thank you for being part of the community that empowers families like theirs through Hagari Rwanda.

Brick by Brick: A Mother’s Journey

Rachel, lovingly known in her community as Mama Messi, is a devoted mother whose journey reflects courage, resilience, and transformation. Her children, Messi and Belinda, have been supported for their education by Hagari since nursery school—a foundation that has helped shape not only their lives but also their mother’s.

In 2023, Rachel and her husband took a bold step toward securing stability for their family: they set out to obtain legal ownership of their land. This dream, long held and deeply rooted, became a reality by the end of 2024—made possible through disciplined saving from Rachel’s salary as a cleaner at Hagari and regular contributions to her neighborhood savings group, Tuzamurane Radari.

But their path was not without obstacles. They faced financial strain from uncooperative land co-owners who delayed the process, the emotional and economic challenge of an unplanned pregnancy despite using family planning, and the sudden need to cover school transfer expenses for one of their children. Amid these pressures, they were also preparing for the birth of their baby— saving each month for essential items and expanding their home to create a welcoming space for their growing family.

Despite these trials, Rachel and her husband pressed on with determination. Drawing on the practical knowledge and life skills gained from Hagari Rwanda’s Family Development Plan—especially in budgeting, goal setting, and planning for emergencies—they overcame each hurdle with grace and perseverance.

Today, Rachel proudly holds the official documents to their land. Their once- crowded home is now expanded and filled with warmth and laughter. Her children are flourishing in school, and Rachel herself stands as a symbol of an empowered motherhood.

She expresses heartfelt gratitude to Hagari Rwanda—not only for supporting her children’s education, but also for walking alongside her as a parent through stable employment, financial literacy, and access to health insurance. Her story is a powerful reminder that with determination, planning, and the right support, even the most difficult dreams can come true.

Charlotte’s Story: A Journey of Discipline, Teamwork, and Hope

Before joining the Hagari program, Nyiranshuti Charlotte and her husband lived with constant financial uncertainty. He worked as a bicycle taxi rider, while Charlotte took on small casual jobs to help support their family. With limited income and no clear financial plan, saving for the future felt like a distant dream.

Their lives began to change when Charlotte joined Hagari’s training program. There, she was introduced to essential life skills—budgeting, saving, and setting achievable financial goals. For the first time, she and her husband saw the power of planning and the strength that comes from working together with a shared purpose.

Motivated by what they had learned, Charlotte and her husband made a firm commitment: they would begin saving 10,000 RWF every week. With discipline and determination, they stuck to their goal, using only extra income to cover daily needs without touching their savings.

Their first milestone was the purchase of a bicycle. Though it took time, their consistent saving paid off. The bicycle allowed Charlotte’s husband to earn a more stable income, and they continued to set their sights on the next step—obtaining a motorcycle driving license.

Through ongoing effort and unity, Charlotte’s husband successfully completed the licensing process. Later, when an additional 50,000 RWF was needed to retrieve the license from the police, they once again turned to the habit that had brought them this far: saving. With patience and perseverance, they raised the money and moved one step closer to their dream.

Though they have not yet purchased their own motorcycle, progress continues. Charlotte’s husband now borrows motorcycles from fellow riders—especially at night—to continue working and earning. This has allowed them to maintain their savings plan while moving steadily toward their ultimate goal: owning a motorcycle that will increase their mobility and create more opportunities for income.

Their journey is a testament to the power of commitment and the strength of partnership. Charlotte and her husband now save 15,000 RWF each week—an inspiring sign of their growth and determination.

The Hagari program didn’t just teach them how to manage money; it gave them tools, mindset, and hope. With every small step, Charlotte’s family is building a brighter, more self-reliant future.

Mama Keza’s Journey with Hagari Rwanda

Pendo
Keza

For a long time, Pendo lived in survival mode. She rarely smiled, spoke harshly to others, and struggled to show affection toward her daughter, Keza. The pain of her past weighed heavily on her, making it difficult to see her child as anything but a reminder of her struggles. Providing for Keza felt more like an obligation than an act of love, and she saw little purpose in planning for the future.

Recently, Keza became very ill, and we witnessed a huge change in Pendo’s approach. Keza started experiencing severe stomach pain, and Pendo took her to a nearby hospital. When the doctors couldn’t find the cause of the pain, Pendo could have easily given up. But something within her—something that had been growing through the lessons and support she received from Hagari Rwanda—pushed her to keep fighting for her daughter.

Determined, she sought treatment at another hospital in Remera, where Keza was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. Yet, even with medication, the pain did not subside. Frustrated but unwilling to accept defeat, Pendo turned to Francine, a fellow mother and family support team member from Hagari. Francine advised her to seek care at Kacyiru Hospital, where more advanced tests revealed that Keza’s ulcer was caused by an H. pylori bacterial infection. Treatment was available, but it required further medication and costs that Pendo could not afford.

In the past, Pendo might have let financial hardship stop her from pursuing the necessary care. But through Hagari’s teachings on saving and financial planning, she had learned the importance of being prepared for emergencies. She borrowed 25,000 RWF ($18) from a local savings group. With this support, she secured the necessary medication for Keza, and day by day, her daughter’s health improved. Today, Keza is fully recovered, and Pendo has already repaid most of her loan, determined to clear the remaining balance.

This experience was more than just a medical journey—it was a transformation of love, responsibility, and hope. Pendo, who has always been fiercely protective of Keza, is now a woman who is equipped and determined to ensure Keza’s well-being. She no longer sees her daughter as a burden but as her greatest blessing. She smiles more, speaks kindly, and seeks advice when faced with challenges. Instead of locking her daughter away in frustration, she now listens, learns, and grows as a parent.

Hagari Rwanda played a crucial role in this transformation. Through parenting workshops, financial literacy training, and a supportive community, Pendo learned how to love, protect, and provide for her child. She no longer lives just to survive—she is thriving. And Keza, once a child who bore the weight of her mother’s struggles, now has a mother who sees her as the reason to push forward, build a better life, and dream of a brighter future.

From Wandering To Walking In Purpose

Mama Moriya shares about her and her daughter’s experience with Hagari Rwanda after only 3 months of being part of the student partnership and family development plan programs!

“It is amazing to witness the extent to which quality education can holistically impact a child’s life. My daughter is a beneficiary of the excellent education provided by Inzozi Academy. Seeing my Moriya transform for the better is greatness unfolding before me. A lot has changed about my child. With only three months of schooling, she can confidently state her name, name her immediate family members, and express herself fairly well in English. Additionally, Moriya has developed good manners; she greets everyone upon arriving home.

There is a drastic difference in our lives before and after Moriya was accepted into the Hagari Rwanda student partnership program. Previously, she stayed home alone while I worked to support the family. I encouraged her to play with our neighbor’s children, but she often wandered beyond set boundaries,

meeting unfamiliar people and picking up bad manners and foul language.

Since she started school, her character has improved significantly through interactions with like-minded peers and ethical teachers.

I have also benefited from Hagari’s family support programs, especially Discipleship. Although I have been a Christian for many years, regularly attending church and reading my bible but, I had never fully understood salvation until Gaston (a Hagari Staff) taught it to us. I vividly remember the sessions about salvation, where Gaston used an illustrated diagram to explain the journey to salvation and how easy it is to drift away if one is not careful. I now know that salvation is the foundation of my Christian faith. When my husband lightly commented about the change in my conduct, it elated my heart, for I knew my effort in trying to live a purpose-driven Christian life was starting to bear fruit.

As beneficiaries of Hagari Rwanda, we meet once a week, and I always look forward to this fellowship. Sometimes, circumstances prevent me from attending, and I feel disappointed, wondering what my colleagues have covered in my absence. I am grateful to Hagari Rwanda for the programs they offer to improve our lives.” -Mama Moriya

A Father’s Gratitude and Community Spirit

During this summer holiday, the Hagari Rwanda community gathered regularly for Umuganda, a traditional Rwandan practice of community work. Among the many hands at work, one figure stood out—Papa Kelve, whose son is supported by Hagari Rwanda. The support his son receives for education has profoundly impacted their lives, and Papa Kelve has found a meaningful way to express his gratitude.

“Participating in Umuganda is my modest way of saying thank you to Hagari Rwanda,” Papa Kelve shared with a warm smile as he helped clear the grounds of Inzozi Academy in preparation for the new academic year starting in September, where his son dreams of a bright future. “It feels good and makes me happy to give back to those who are giving my son Kelve a good education. I pity anyone who avoids community work; they miss out on the joy of contributing to something bigger than themselves.”

The sense of fulfillment he has obtained from his involvement is so profound and evident. With every task he undertook, whether moving the dirt or carrying boulders, Papa Kelve was not just working, but rather he has been investing in his son’s future and the well-being of the entire Hagari Rwanda community.

“As a parent, seeing my son receive an education is a blessing, but having the opportunity to give back in some way, through Umuganda, is an even greater blessing,” he added. His dedication has been obvious, and it is clear that his involvement was never an obligation but rather an act of love.

For Papa Kelve, Umuganda at Inzozi Academy has not been just a duty; it has been an opportunity to connect with others, to share in the collective effort of building a better school for their children. “I’m happy to have been given such an opportunity to help at Inzozi Academy,” he says, reflecting on the friendships and sense of purpose he has found through this communal work. His story reflects the power of gratitude and community spirit. Through his actions, Papa Kelve has embodied the essence of Umuganda—coming together to uplift one another, to create a brighter future for all, and to give back with a grateful heart.

Becoming a Model Family

“Fabrice’s family is a great example of cooperation; the parents work together as a team,” says Ms. Doreen, the support worker for the Hagari Rwanda family. This demonstrates the strong bond between the family and their support worker, setting them on the path to becoming a role model household within Hagari Rwanda.

In this four-person household, the eldest child, Uwase Manzi Fabrice, receives support from Hagari Rwanda. Fabrice’s family shows the power of unity in overcoming the daily challenges of life in Kigali. Mr. Niyonzima, the head of the household, transports goods and people by bicycle, while his wife, Charlotte Nyiranshuti, works as a janitor at a home and a pharmacy.

Mama Fabrice shares, “We may not have a lavish life, but at least we are able to have the basics.” Following the advice of Ms. Doreen, Mama Fabrice started saving 5000 Rwandan francs ($3.75) per month to ensure she has funds to cover tuition for her youngest son, Pacifique Niyibokora, since he is not supported by Hagari Rwanda. Currently, Pacifique is in school, which has given his mother a chance to focus on making ends meet while her children are away at school. The household is now bustling with activity, with both Pacifique and Fabrice attending school.

It’s heartwarming to know that Fabrice, who is a Nursery three student at Inzozi Academy—a school founded and funded by Hagari Rwanda—provides tutorial lessons to his younger brother, Pacifique. This bond between the brothers demonstrates the positive effects of educational opportunities and community support.

Hagari Rwanda’s support goes beyond financial aid; it fosters a sense of purpose and direction within the family. The collaboration between Hagari Rwanda and Fabrice’s family demonstrates the significant impact of community and support systems in promoting resilience and growth. Mama Fabrice’s saving habit, inspired by Ms. Doreen, has not only secured Pacifique’s education but also encouraged financial discipline within the family. This positive change is evidence of the beneficial influence of Hagari Rwanda’s programs, showing how targeted advice and support can lead to sustainable improvements in the lives of beneficiaries.

As Fabrice continues to excel at Inzozi Academy, he not only paves the way for his own future but also sets a remarkable example for his sibling. The family’s journey from a survival state showcases the transformative power of unity, education, and dedicated support. Through the joint efforts of Hagari Rwanda and the unwavering commitment of the family, they have overcome significant challenges, setting a foundation for a brighter future. The family hopes to build their own house on their plot of land once they save enough funds for construction, which would ease the burden of paying rent.

Overcoming Addiction & Rebuilding a Family

Alcohol has always been my source of solace in the face of rejection. In alcohol, I found the elusive peace and attention I craved. It eased the pain of my life,” says Mama Ketia, a beneficiary of Hagari Rwanda.

Life has always been challenging for Mama Ketia, a mother of five. She used to rely on alcohol for solace, which left her feeling ashamed in front of her children. Her drinking habit led to injuries and erratic behavior, causing hardship for her children. Her case worker, Ms. Claudine, took a non-judgmental approach and offered continuous support, helping Mama Ketia find the strength to confront her struggles. Thanks to Ms. Claudine’s support and encouragement, Mama Ketia has achieved sobriety, aiming to mend her relationship with her children and the community.

She no longer has the desire to trade off household items for a few francs to buy her daily drink, and now she is able to save a franc, which will go towards covering her family’s basics. Mama Ketia’s story is one of transformation and hope. Through the relentless support and care from Hagari Rwanda, particularly from Ms. Claudine, Mama Ketia has found a new path. She now stands as a testament to the power of compassion, patience, and unwavering support in overcoming addiction. Her children, once burdened with the fear and instability brought on by her drinking, now see a mother who is present and responsible – a loving mother who is an active participant in their nurturing.

This journey has not only transformed Mama Ketia’s life but has also brought stability and happiness to her children, replacing embarrassment and fear with security and care. The Family Support team is now delighted with the fact that it is easy to get hold of Mama Ketia, as she is able to keep ahold of a mobile phone without trading it off for a few francs to buy her drink.
